So congratulations to Jason for having a successful operation and for taking the initiative to pass the word so that others might benefit from his experience.  Jason gave me permission to use his quote directly, and that is appreciated.

Once again, when a long-time sinus sufferer who has had previous unsuccessful operations says he found something that changed his life for the better, it is definitely time to listen.  The unfortunate down side for most people is that they would need to travel to Los Angeles or New Orleans to obtain this laser sinus surgery treatment, at least for now.

In a subsequent email exchange with Jason, we discussed why more ENT surgeons are not using this laser sinus surgery procedure.  Here is what he had to say:

“And to address your other question: Why aren't more doctors using it?
I don't know. My doctor said it takes extra skill, and isn't easy. I
think: Once in practice, most doctors stick to what they know. And
since Sinu-Clear isn't taught too many places, well, it makes sense...
And if you're an established ENT, how much time do you devote to
changing your entire surgical method? How many surgeries can you do in
a day and still make a profit? Sinu-Clear isn't fast.

It's almost like being a pro golfer and changing your swing... Some
do, but not without risk of losing a couple balls in the trees.”

I think he is right, but that is a shame.  It basically says that most ENT’s are more interested in continuing to do traditional operations, which often don’t work, rather than learn a new technique like laser sinus surgery that could help patients.  Or perhaps they aren’t convinced that Sinu-Clear is superior.  A cynic might suggest they make more money just continuing to do it the old way.  I don’t mean to be cynical because ENTs are important, but I’ve been in an ENT’s office trying to ask for information and basically felt like I was getting the bum’s rush because he needed to see another patient.  God forbid he wouldn’t make $150 every ten minutes.

So individuals need to educate themselves about sinus problems and take the responsibility for their problems.  If your sinus problem responds to normal medications and can be treated that way, you won’t have much of a problem.  If that isn’t the case, and it’s not the case for many of us, you need to really be careful and get educated.  I would suggest calling Dr. Paley’s office and consider whether going to L.A. for treatment and possibly laser sinus surgery if you are told you need an operation for polyps or a deviated septum.
