A gentleman named Jason recently contacted me and said the following about his laser sinus surgery operation from Dr. Harvey Paley, whose practice is in Beverly Hills, CA.

This guy uses a procedure called Sinu-Clear... It is a laser that heats up salt water that irrigates the nasal cavity during surgery.

The heated saltwater / laser removes bad tissue, without causing trauma to the good tissue. 

Dr. Paley is only 1 of 2 doctors in the United States that performs this type of surgery (That I know of). He not only removed my polyps, but corrected my deviated septum.

This is something to pay attention to if you are a sinus sufferer.  As I’ve pointed out before in other articles, I am not a big fan of sinus operations.  I’ve had two, and I was still getting sinus infections after each of them, so neither really fixed my problem.  In fact, I’ve heard of very few people who have had sinus surgery and who were pleased about the results over time.

So when someone is as enthusiastic about his operation as Jason is, it is time to listen, especially since he suffered for 15 years and had 3 previous surgeries.  He has described the basics of the laser sinus surgery procedure in the above quote, and one can read more on Dr. Paley’s web site, www.sinu-clear.com.  I just want to emphasize here that there is apparently very little bleeding during the procedure, since the laser cauterizes the tissue being operated on.  Because of this there is no need for nasal packing, and this is a huge positive, as those of us who have gone through a conventional operation with a scalpel and had our noses packed can attest.  For me it was just awful. 

This type of approach seems to make perfect sense. That is, using laser and endoscope technology to limit bleeding and see clearly what is being operated on.  The first question I had is “why are there only two surgeons in the U.S. doing this operation?”  It is not brand new, and in fact this laser sinus surgery was apparently pioneered by Dr. Daniel M. Schuman from Boca Raton, Florida over 10 years ago.  I have been told that Dr. Schuman has subsequently retired from his medical practice.

I did phone Dr. Paley’s office and spoke to his office manager, who was very helpful.  It seems that if more people knew of laser sinus surgery and were asking for it, there would be more incentive for ENT surgeons to become trained in the procedure and obtain the equipment, which I imagine must be expensive.                   CONTINUED
