A reader asked if I was aware of a product called Joe Johnson’s Sinus Doctor Sinus Treatment.  I had never heard of it, so I did some research.  The author of this article is not a medical professional and cannot give a medical opinion of the product being sold.  He can, however, discuss the presentation of the material and whether or not it appears to offer a legitimate remedy for sinusitis.

One of the problems here is that Joe Johnson is not qualified to be a sinus researcher either.  He is not Doctor Joe Johnson, for example, and does not state that he has any degrees associated with medicine (or anything else for that matter. His credentials are stated as “the world’s highest paid natural medicine researcher”

and “alternative medicine detective”.  With this in mind, I suggest that people hold on tight to the $67 that Mr. Johnson is asking for his plant extracts, which will be discussed more below.

Unfortunately, sinusitis is a very complex subject, and ENT’s do not have all the answers about how to treat each and every patient.  Some sufferers respond well to standard treatments.  There is, however, a subset of patients who typically have been treated with all the known remedies to no avail and have often been subject to one or more sinus surgeries as well, still suffering subsequent sinus infections.  There is serious research underway in a number of different areas, such as the role of fungus in causing sinus infections, as well as research on biofilms, which appear to essentially protect bacteria and make it more difficult or impossible for agents such as antibiotics to neutralize.  When I say serious research, I mean research by people with medical degrees at institutions like the Mayo Clinic for example, in the case of topical fungal therapy.  These highly qualified researchers write papers and publish the results in medical journals, and their work is subject to peer review.  The bottom line is that since all the answers to chronic sinus problems are not known, there is room for snake oil salesmen to enter the fray, come up with a sales pitch, and sell something to people searching for an answer and who feel desperate in some cases.

Again, I am not qualified to state for certain that Mr. Johnson’s products are the equivalent of snake oil.  Of course they have not been approved by the FDA, but that should not be surprising given the hype of the product sales pages.  His offer consists of three bottles of plant extracts, and these are cinnamomum zeylonium, which is collected in the Indian sub-continent, engena corsphylate collected in Madagascar, ant thymus vulgaria (serpyllum) found in the Balkans.  It is stated that these products are or have the properties of antibiotics.  Also included are bonuses consisting of several reports and videos, together allegedly worth over $300.
